CCPR/Itambé IT spin-off: two active-active data centers and zero RPO and RTO

Updated on

Summary

  • Client: CCPR / Itambé (Brazil)
  • Project: IT spin-off, building and deploying two in-house data centers running active-active, and migrating IT services and SAP to HANA
  • Period: September 2019 to July 2020
  • Budget: BRL 27 million
  • Result: zero RPO and RTO, with no operational downtime
  • My role: strategic infrastructure consultant

When CCPR and Itambé split, the IT of both companies was separated without stopping operations. I worked on the project as strategic infrastructure consultant. The solution was to build and deploy two in-house data centers running active-active and to migrate IT services and SAP to HANA. The project had a BRL 27 million budget, zero RPO and RTO, and ran from September 2019 to July 2020.

Context

CCPR and Itambé went through a corporate spin-off. Systems, infrastructure and IT services that served both companies had to be separated, and operations could not stop during the transition.

Challenge

  • Separate IT services and SAP so each company could run independently.
  • Lose no data and stop no operations during the separation.
  • Meet the spin-off deadline within a defined budget.

What was done

  • Two in-house data centers were built and deployed, running active-active: both run at the same time and each takes over the other’s load if one fails.
  • IT services were migrated to the new infrastructure.
  • SAP was migrated to HANA.

Results in numbers

RPO (acceptable data loss)Zero
RTO (acceptable downtime)Zero

Why two active-active data centers

Zero RPO and RTO mean losing no data and stopping no service, even if an entire data center fails. That is only possible when both environments run together and in sync. With a single data center, or with a standby site that has to be switched on when the failure happens, there is always some data loss or some downtime.

What the client gained

  • Its own independent IT, ready for the company’s next phase.
  • SAP on HANA, on new infrastructure.
  • Continuity guaranteed by design, with zero RPO and RTO.
